The all new Golf is, as we’ve said before, an evolution and not a revolution and this follows Volkswagen’s strategy throughout the Golf’s history. Every new model has just been a bit different to the last one and each is easily recognisable as a Golf.

Every new Golf has been a step over its predecessor and the new shape Golf is no different as it has significantly improved in most departments. The ride and handling are noticeably better, the interior quality has vastly improved and the materials used give it the nice all round perception of a quality car. The biggest improvement is the reduction of cabin noise to almost nothing. VW has obviously spent an enormous amount of money on making the cabin a very nice and peaceful place to sit.

The car we tested was fitted with a 1.4 litre TSI petrol engine that produces 122ps, goes from 0-62mph in 9.5 seconds, has a top speed of 124mph where permitted and Co2 emissions of 144g/km. The official combined fuel consumption figure is 45.6mpg; we achieved just over 43mpg according to the on-board computer.

I used the Golf in the recent snow and found it would go anywhere. It managed to get through places where other cars were stuck and you can physically hear the systems working to find traction on slippery surfaces. Whatever VW have done to improve its driving in the wet and snow, it certainly works.

The new Golf is not dramatically different but it is a safe bet. The car we tested costs £15,963 on the road so it is not a cheap car but then you would expect that a quality German car wouldn’t be.
