We have had this test car for the past few days and it goes back to Chevrolet today, so we haven’t had much of a chance to really try it out. This five door, five seat car from Chevrolet replaces the Matiz, which was a great success for Daewoo originally and then Chevrolet took over the name. The Matiz was one of those cars that never won admiration or awards; it just got on with being a small, economical car with no frills, but it did the job that it was designed to do.

I had to look at the price list to see where the GT was positioned within the Clio range and was surprised to find far more Clio models than I had originally expected. The full range of models, excluding engine choices isExtreme 3 door (with or without A/C), Expression 5 door (with or without A/C), Dynamique TomTom 3 and 5 door, GT 3 door, Privilege TomTom 5 door, Initiale TomTom 5 door, Renaultsport Cup and Renaultsport. If you then add in the special editions of i-Music which is based on the Extreme, and the World Series which is based on the Dynamique, you find it to be quite a confusing range. The GT seems to fit somewhere in the middle of all of these.

The Ghost name is a part of Rolls-Royce’s history, with its Silver Ghost being a legend in motoring terms. The Silver Ghost was the ultimate motor car and every manufacturer wanted to have a car to match it in all aspects. Very few have ever achieved this; it is a unique name that is so well respected, not just in the motor industry, but in most other industries. Every company wanted their products to be the ‘Rolls-Royce’, whether they were pens, dining suites or washing machines.

This is the second Polo we have had on test from Volkswagen in the past month. The first was the Polo Mode, the model below the SE, and this had the 1.2 litre petrol engine that produces 60ps.

We went down to the factory in Goodwood to have a guided tour of the ultra-modern and almost quiet plant to see the new cars being lovingly hand built. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars employs around 850 people in the UK and has just gone from one shift per day to two to enable the factory to produce an extra car in the range, the all new Ghost (we will feature more about this car next week). Rolls-Royce moved to its new home from Crewe in 2002 and since then they have seen a steady growth in worldwide sales, going from 300 in 2003 to 805 in 2005 and then to 1212 in 2008. They do however, expect sales to end up slightly down on last year due to the economic problems in some of its traditionally strong territories. Rolls-Royce currently has 83 dealers worldwide but this could grow by up to 20 more in areas not currently covered by the network.

They do say there isn’t a bad car to be built any more these days, but this car has to be the exception to the rule. The car I rented at Malaga airport last weekend was the Indian built Tata Indica, a car that has never graced our shores and hopefully never will. It did however, come into the country back in 2004 under the guise of a Rover Cityrover and was sold up until the collapse of MG Rover. The Cityrover was basically the Indica with different badges and we were told at the time that more thorough checks and better quality was guaranteed. This claim was dubious at the time.

This all new C3 goes on sale in the UK in mid January and is bound to appeal to those who want a very fashionable, stylish five door supermini. The new C3 on first sight does look like the old model but when you park the two side by side, you can easily see that the new one is much different and so much more pleasing to look at. Citroen has taken a classic shaped car that was already unique and made it better. The curved roofline remains but somehow they have tidied up the whole car’s exterior design.
