David Blackburn has owned the Colt Car Company in Cirencester for many years and was the importer of Mitsubishi cars and light commercials. The company was sold to Mitsubishi Motor Company (MMC) earlier this year, so it is now wholly owned by the Japanese company. MMC is a huge company, with the production of vehicles being just a small part of its vast empire.

We have had a few Infiniti models recently, all from the Infiniti centre in Paris. All were French registered and all left hand drive. They came from Paris because this is where the closest dealer is to us until the first one in the UK in Reading opens in a few weeks.

If Audi, BMW and Volvo would have launched the Q5, X3 and XC60 with just a 3.7 litre V6 petrol engine, with no prospect of a smaller petrol or diesel engine in the pipeline for a long time, if ever, you would think that they had gone completely mad. However, this is what Infiniti have done with the EX37. The French registered EX37 GT we had recently was one of four Infiniti models which were delivered by transporter from the Infiniti centre in Paris. These were the closest cars to Leeds until the first UK dealer opens in Reading later this year.

The current Swift has been on sale in the UK since 2005, with the Sport version being introduced in mid 2006. It really hasn’t aged in those four years and it still looks as fresh today as it did at launch. Suzuki has used some of Mini’s tactics by offering personalisation and a good choice of colours which give them a very individual look. The Swift is built alongside other Suzuki models at the Magyar plant in Hungary.

The Mini First is the new lead in model to the ever popular Mini range and is the most attractively priced Mini so far. The First is priced at £10,950 on the road for the standard car but once you start adding on a few optional extras, then it can easily bring the cost up to that of the Mini One at £12,345. However, the customer audience that this car is aimed at will probably stick with the standard car, possibly adding the option of air conditioning at £650. Other options include a design package at £525, tech package at £855 and a salt package at £390.

The new Suzuki Alto is built alongside the Nissan Pixo at the Maruti Suzuki plant in India and is essentially the same car, with just a few differences to the exterior and interior. This is the seventh generation Alto, with the first one being launched in Japan in 1979 and into the UK in 1981. Since then 42,000 have been sold here in the UK.

The closest Infiniti dealer to us at the moment is in Paris, until the first UK showroom opens here in Reading later this year. The car we received from Infiniti for us to test was a Paris registered, left hand drive vehicle. France has its national tower, the Eiffel, and we too have our own tower in Yorkshire, the Emley Moor mast, which is almost as tall as the Eiffel Tower but instead of sightseers going up it, ours serves a much more useful purpose as it transmits TV and radio and acts as a telecommunications station.
