The Grande Punto now has a new name, a new improved interior, a burnished chrome finisher on the bonnet and a re-designed rear where the bumper now incorporates the number plate. It has also acquired some all new fuel efficient engines.

When this car arrived, in semi-darkness, the neighbour’s curtains did start twitching and you could feel the excitement on my cul-de-sac. They all thought an expensive supercar had arrived and I knew it wouldn’t be long before I had them at my door asking for the keys, and to let them sit in it. As the sun rose the next morning, not one person asked to have a look. The disappointment could be seen clearly on their faces as they realised that it was not an Aston Martin, but a Renault Laguna.

Although the north of England press launch for the SX4 was just a few miles north of Leeds, and on a good day is only 40 minutes from home, the journey took around three hours on the day due to the black ice that brought the area to a standstill. It was a standstill if you were lucky, as those that were moving were generally sliding into another car or into a ditches or walls.

We keep testing used cars to make sure that they are standing the test of time and ensuring the quality remains as good as when they were new. However, this car can hardly be classed as a used car as it is less than two years old and has covered only 21,000 miles; it looks as if it is brand new and just out of the showroom. The mileage it has covered means that this Q7 has only just been run in and loosened up.

The original Twingo was driven by the rich and famous, used for taking hens to market and used by the city-slickers and fashion conscious in Paris as the ultimate runabout. It was all things to all men and women in Europe and was regarded as not only a small workhorse, but also as a fashion accessory. Today, even with the introduction of the new model, used ones in France are still highly desirable. However, the previous Twingo was never built in right hand drive form so was never sold in the UK by Renault, but a few did come in as personal imports and these certainly did turn heads.

When we first saw this car at the Audi R&D facility in Ingolstadt in 2007, we were taken aback by its styling and what we thought Audi were trying to achieve. The car we saw was in the wrong colour, it had the wrong wheels, the wrong interior, which was beige cloth; in fact, the whole car simply looked a mess and we left Germany wondering if the mighty Audi machine had got it wrong for once. Then we saw it again a few weeks later in a much better colour, with larger wheels and with black leather upholstery, and it looked a million times better.
