The all new Fiesta is a brilliant little car and appears to be winning award after award. The reason for this success is simple: it looks good, is reasonable value for money and has a good level of equipment. It also appeals to all ages, both male and female. It is another great model from Ford and has come at just the right time for them.

Olbia on the Costa Smerelda in Northern Sardinia is a popular place for many manufacturers to launch a new car. It is easy and quick to get to from mainland Europe and is only a two hour 10 minute flight from London. The roads are reasonably empty and the scenery is spectacular whether you are on the coast or up in the mountains. The weather is generally good all year round and is particularly good at this time of year with a temperature of around twenty five degrees centigrade, even though it can be windy. It is becoming a popular tourist attraction with many budget airlines now flying from the UK but it can be an expensive place to have a holiday.

The all new Mazda 6 has been on the market for nearly a year now and has proved to be very popular for both fleet and retail. It is a very good looking D sector Hatchback car and in this market, style does sell so Mazda has got off to a good start with it. Not only does the new ‘6’ have some very stylish lines, it has a high quality interior, is remarkably comfortable and has plenty of leg and head room for five adults. The Hatchback that we had on test also had a good sized luggage area and with the rear seats folded down, it almost turned into a small van. The switchgear throughout the car is very easy to use, with no hidden buttons or complicated systems to follow. Some may even say it is a bit old fashioned as it is so easy to use but it is all very simple and it all works well.

I did think Scotland was a strange place to launch a new car but all became apparent when we arrived there. We were the first group to go to the event and I suppose we were the guinea pigs to make sure it all worked out. Over the next couple of weeks the press will be arriving at Glasgow airport from all over the world to test this new British built sports car. They picked Loch Lomond for its beautiful scenery, great roads and the friendliness of the Scots. Most of the guests will never have been to the UK before for a launch so it seemed an obvious choice to use this area although there are many other stunning places in England and Wales. The pound/euro also made the decision easier, as it is more cost effective to hold it nearer to home. On the day we were there it rained and rained. The mist came down, the scenery disappeared behind it and the roads were flooded so it was quite a miserable day to be driving a hot new supercar.

It has only been about a month since we went to the UK launch of Nissan’s new baby car in Oxford. On that day we drove the car about for about 20 minutes in heavy traffic to Blenheim Palace and 20 minutes back to the centre of Oxford. It wasn’t much in the way of a test and I almost felt that Nissan were deliberately keeping us away from motorways and dual carriageways so we couldn’t test its ‘high speed’ capabilities. I think their intentions were for us to just use the car in urban low traffic where it is designed to be, as a city car.

Back to Scotland for the second time in a week and this time the sun shone with a temperature of 18 degrees with clear blue skies. We drove from Inverness to Dundonnell, past the Lochs and past the mountains; some of which still have over a metre of snow on them. This part of the world has stunning scenery, especially when the sun shines and you can get the roof down.
