The all new 7 Series design has corrected everything that the previous model had wrong with it. As good as it was on the inside, the exterior design just wasn’t right as it was too fussy at the rear and didn’t look dynamic enough. The new 7 Series has re-written the book and the designers have created some extraordinary clever lines and have made it just so much better. The boot lid now looks like part of the car and not like an after thought. The strong, bold side shoulder lines make the 7 Series look more muscular; this gives it a wider stance and it looks very elegant and distinctive. The new larger BMW ‘kidney grille’ is the perfect size and it is now in proportion with the rest of the car.

Dubrovnik is on the southern tip of Croatia. It is an area that has had its troubles over the years, the last of which being the local war in the early nineties. Dubrovnik is a walled city with the only access being via the old gates and over a moat. There are no vehicles allowed inside the wall but once beyond it, it is just a labyrinth of narrow streets and historic buildings. In 1991 the city was shelled from the overlooking mountains and 78% of roofs on the buildings were destroyed. The area around Dubrovnik has a spectacular coastline with thousands of bays and coves, along with hundreds of small islands. It is a beautiful part of the world with much to see and do.

The ‘e’ badges are now being introduced gradually into the Audi range, with the A6 being the most recent to receive it. The ‘e’ is Audi’s way of saying it has green models on offer and they are trying to get the green message across. The A6 TDIe is powered by the latest 2.0 litre common rail diesel engine with a power output of 136ps and a 0-62mph time of 10.3 seconds. Looking at the size of the car, the first impression is that it will be too slow and not have enough power under the bonnet to propel all that metal. However, it has more than enough power and is surprisingly quick. On the motorway it does not slow down at all even when driving up some of the longest, steepest inclines; it always has plenty of power left in reserve. It is also extremely quiet and refined, with hardly any noise intrusion into the cabin.

Pixo is a made up name which came from the marketing department at Nissan Europe and love the name or hate it, it’s here to stay. It sounds like a cross between a small person with big ears and a packet of sage and onion stuffing, but no doubt the people who came up with it are happy. It is certainly a name you can’t and won’t forget quickly, like so many others.

The new Insight is Honda’s answer to going ‘green’. The name has been used before on a two seater petrol/electric car and features Honda’s IMA system – integrated motor assist. The Insight has some unique features in terms of technology and styling. It was originally billed as the ‘people’s hybrid’, affordable by most and to be driven in all parts of the world. This may become true but the cost of the car is more than what was originally planned.

On paper the 116d looks like a non-starter in the market in comparison to the 118d. They both share the same 2.0 litre diesel engine but the 118d produces 143hp compared to a lowly 116hp on the 116d. The Co2 difference is only 1g/km with the 116d being 118g/km and the 118d at 119g/km. Is there any reason for the 116d? The 118d appears to do everything better; it has more power and is still under the 120g/km VED band, making it only £35 per year to tax.
