I went over to the BMW Headquarters in Munich and went to the famous ‘four cylinder’ building which literally is four cylinders about twelve storeys high and is where most of the decisions are made. It also houses hundreds of staff who are responsible for all aspects of this international business.

On the opposite side of the road is BMW World, a new building that is huge and very impressive. It has a showroom with many cars on display, four café’s, two restaurants, conference centres and a shop. It also has a hand over section where customers from all over the world can go to collect their cars and drive them home, except in the case of North American customers who can still take delivery of their new vehicle but can then drive it anywhere in Europe and then take it back to Munich where BMW arrange shipping back to the States. European customers generally collect their cars and drive them straight home.

The cars are delivered to BMW World the day before delivery. They are cleaned, checked, have a PDI and have number plates fitted either from the country they are destined for or transit plates. The cars are kept underground until they are needed and each car is on a tight delivery time. Customers are encouraged to be at the site on time to avoid missing their hand over slot. Up to 250 cars per day are collected and are taken from underground storage to the pick up area by lifts. While we were there, we had a look at all the cars in storage and we were surprised to see that over 25% of them where white.
