The Volkswagen Group are offering the all new 1.6 TDI engine in some of its models and we recently had the Golf model fitted with this ultra efficient diesel engine. The new 1.6 litre unit produces 105ps, goes from 0-62mph in 11.3 seconds and its official combined fuel consumption figure is 62.8 mpg. The Golf we had on test was new to the fleet so it didn’t have any mileage on the clock so it felt a bit tight and wasn’t overly powerful, but this I’m sure will improve as time goes on, once it has covered a few more miles.
Despite it being new, I found the power to be more than adequate for the car. However, other people who I have spoken to about this new engine have found it to be under powered, especially on uphill sections on motorways. I did not find this to be a problem as it stayed easily to the 70mph limit and did not run out of steam at all. If you were on a German autobahn and wanted to maintain 120mph then this I would see as a problem, but on UK roads the power is plentiful.
This Golf, like all new Golf models, is extremely quiet with hardly any noise intrusion in the cabin. At motorway speeds it is so silent, which was a surprise as we thought that the engine would have been working overtime and would have generated a lot more noise. The 1.6 TDI engine is coupled to a five speed manual gearbox.
The SE model has a long list of standard equipment and it would be difficult to spend any more money on options.
We drove this car on a variety of roads around town, on motorways and we made some slow journeys in villages and up in the hills in the Pennines. We achieved 53.4 mpg on average according to the on board computer.
If you want more mpg then the Golf to buy would be the BlueMotion version as it will easily get around 10 more miles per gallon. The price of the car we tested was £17,321 on the road.
