Hyundai just seem to be going from strength to strength, with sales figures up 323% last month compared with August 2008. They sold a total of 3,737 cars last month, giving Hyundai a market share of 5.6%. This would have been unheard of just a few months ago but Hyundai have the right cars available at the right time, with many of their sales being as a result of the scrappage scheme. This has undoubtedly helped their rise in the sales charts.
The i20 sits in between the popular i10 and the i30. They are both modern looking cars but have a price that is almost too good to be true. The i20 sits in the B sector and competes with the Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa, Peugeot 207 and the current VW Polo. The price of the i20 however, is more in line with smaller cars in the A sector such as the Ford Ka and Fiat 500.
The car we tested was fitted with the 1.4 litre CRDi diesel engine that produces 89bhp, goes from 0-62mph in 13.6 seconds and has a top speed where permitted, of 106mph. It has a CO2 emissions output of 118g/km and the official fuel consumption figure for this car is 62.8 mpg combined, although we only achieved an average of 59.4 mpg according to the on board computer. All these figures do not sound very exciting and they are not, the power still more than adequate and on the motorway, it holds at 70mph with ease. It is also extremely quiet and all of that is what you need in this type of small hatchback car.
The interior is well appointed; it is comfortable and the quality is remarkably high. There is enough space for two adults in the rear but getting three people on the back seat is a bit of a squeeze. The front seats are contoured so they hold you firmly in place when cornering and they are very supportive on long journeys.
The i20 range starts from £8,730 on the road for the 1.2 petrol Classic three door. A mid range 1.4 petrol Comfort five door costs £10,300. The car we tested was the top of the range 1.4 CRDi diesel Style five door, which is priced at £12,200 on the road. For this money you do get a long list of standard equipment. This includes: climate control, 16” alloy wheels, front and rear electric windows, steering wheel controls, USB and iPod compatibility, six speakers, side and curtain airbags, trip computer, cooled glove box, front fog lights and electrically adjustable, folding and heated door mirrors.
Hyundai are certainly offering motorists just what they want at the moment: a well built car that is comfortable, economical and has plenty of space at an affordable price.
