The current Swift has been on sale in the UK since 2005, with the Sport version being introduced in mid 2006. It really hasn’t aged in those four years and it still looks as fresh today as it did at launch. Suzuki has used some of Mini’s tactics by offering personalisation and a good choice of colours which give them a very individual look. The Swift is built alongside other Suzuki models at the Magyar plant in Hungary.
The Sport version is powered by a 1.6 litre VVT petrol engine that produces 125ps, goes from 0-62mph in 8.9 seconds with a top speed, where permitted, of 124mph. In today’s market, the CO2 emission figure of 171 g/km does look a bit high compared to many of its competitors. The official combined fuel figure is 39.8 mpg, so much like the CO2 figure, it is not the best in its class.
The design is very appealing as it does look like a hot hatch. It has a rear spoiler, 17” 10 spoke alloy wheels, front fog lights and a body kit so it does attract attention. The handling is extremely good for the size of the car, it feels safe and solid and has an uprated chassis with stiffer springs and dampers, making it feel like a true sports car.
The interior also looks sporty, with red and black seats and matching red and black floor mats. The seats are comfortable and supportive but some may find them to be too hard and with the stiff suspension, it may not suit all tastes. The Sport model has four seats only.
The price and standard specification is where the Sport scores highly. It is priced at £11,990 and it does look to be extremely good value for money. However, if it is not the sporty version that customers want, then the 1.3 GL three door is priced at £8,750.
