The all new Mazda 6 has been on the market for nearly a year now and has proved to be very popular for both fleet and retail. It is a very good looking D sector Hatchback car and in this market, style does sell so Mazda has got off to a good start with it. Not only does the new ‘6’ have some very stylish lines, it has a high quality interior, is remarkably comfortable and has plenty of leg and head room for five adults. The Hatchback that we had on test also had a good sized luggage area and with the rear seats folded down, it almost turned into a small van. The switchgear throughout the car is very easy to use, with no hidden buttons or complicated systems to follow. Some may even say it is a bit old fashioned as it is so easy to use but it is all very simple and it all works well.

The main reason for having this car was to try the new 2.2 litre diesel engine from Mazda. The ‘6’ is the first to have it fitted although the new Mazda 3 will also be available with the 2.2d engine early next month. The Mazda 6 TS2 comes with a power output of 163ps but we did try the same engine in the Sport model with a larger power output of 185ps. Having driven both quite extensively, the 163ps does seem to be more balanced and seems to be the perfect combination in this car. The new engine is so smooth, quiet and refined. The 185ps just seemed to have too much power for the new ‘6’.

The car we tested costs £19,010 which for the design, power, quality and comfort is not a bad package. The 163ps goes from 0-62mph in 9.2 seconds, which is not frighteningly fast but more than adequate for a D sector Hatchback diesel car. The official combined fuel consumption figure is 51.4mpg and it has a Co2 emissions figure of 147g/km.
