FORD – The Ford Capri is celebrating its 40th birthday. Production ended in 1986 and nearly two million were sold.

MINI – It has been 50 years since the first Mini was built at Oxford. The registration number of the first car was 621 AOK. The Mini was built at the Oxford plant from 1959 to 1968 and then production was transferred to Longbridge. Since 1959 over six million classic and new Mini models have been sold worldwide.

PEUGEOT – Has announced the 407 Saloon and SW will be available with the 1.6 litre HDI 110 diesel engine with Co2 emissions of 129g/km. Prices start at £18,745 for the S model.

The 90th Anniversary Barcelona motor show, 7th May 2009

There were very few new models or concept cars on show at this year’s event. The show had been cancelled up until around two months ago, but the local MP’s decided it was too important for the area so they offered the exhibitors a much more attractive package that would keep the costs much lower and enable the show to go on.

FORD – The iosis-Max, a mid sized MPV with sliding rear doors was shown. It is likely that this concept will soon become reality.

LADA – Had a large stand with some fairly modern looking cars. They are still displaying and selling new the Niva 4X4, that was last sold in the UK in 1997.

LAND ROVER – Unveiled the 2010 MY Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and the Discovery 4, which is now available with a 3.0 litre TDV6 diesel engine.

MINI – Had an unusual display of four Mini Clubman models that looked as though they had been planted in the grass. They had engines in them, were fully trimmed, had the exhaust still fitted and all the brakes were intact. It did look odd but it also attracted plenty of cameras.

MITSUBISHI – Showed the concept i-MiEV Sport Air model which is driven purely by electric motors. They confirmed that the i-MiEV, which is based on the i-Car, will be available in the UK as an electric car as early as November this year. It will take 7 hours to charge from flat and have a range of around 100 miles. It will also be able to be ‘quick charged’ from flat to 80% in 30 minutes, if the owner has a special charging device.

NISSAN – Showed the new Cube, which is likely to go on sale in mid 2010.

Also shown was the Qazana concept car, a smaller version of the popular Qashqai. It is believed that the next generation Micra will share the same platform.

SEAT – In their home town, showed the Bocanegra, which is based on the Ibiza Sports Coupe but has a black front end, a black rear diffuser and black and red quilted seats.

SSANGYONG – The C200 Aero made its world debut at Barcelona. It is the smallest vehicle they make for Europe and will compete with cars such as the Ford Kuga, Volkswagen Tiguan and Peugeot 4008/3008. It is expected that both a 2WD and 4WD will be offered in the UK.

SUBARU – The R-1e electric car was shown for the first time in Europe. It was not clear as to what technology Subaru are using on this vehicle and nobody on the stand could answer any questions.
