The ‘e’ badges are now being introduced gradually into the Audi range, with the A6 being the most recent to receive it. The ‘e’ is Audi’s way of saying it has green models on offer and they are trying to get the green message across. The A6 TDIe is powered by the latest 2.0 litre common rail diesel engine with a power output of 136ps and a 0-62mph time of 10.3 seconds. Looking at the size of the car, the first impression is that it will be too slow and not have enough power under the bonnet to propel all that metal. However, it has more than enough power and is surprisingly quick. On the motorway it does not slow down at all even when driving up some of the longest, steepest inclines; it always has plenty of power left in reserve. It is also extremely quiet and refined, with hardly any noise intrusion into the cabin.
The interior is typically Audi, first class throughout. The fit and finish just seems to get better and the haptics also seem to improve constantly as the switches and controls are all consistent in the way they look, feel and sound. The materials used throughout the car are of a very high quality and the leather upholstery which comes as standard, is excellent.
The car we tested did have a few options fitted including 18” 10 spoke alloys at £880, HDD satellite navigation with Audi music interface at £735, heated front seats at £275, metallic paint at £585 and rear parking sensors at £295. All of which comes to a total of £27,670 on the road.
The main reason people would buy the TDIe is because of economy and low Co2. Both of these figures do not disappoint as the Co2 emission figure is 139g/km and the official combined fuel figure is 53.3mpg. During the time we had this car it achieved an average of 42.8mpg on numerous journeys, on all types of roads. However, if you reset trip computer two for a long journey mainly using motorways, then it would easily achieve over 46mpg. This is pretty good for the size of car and very acceptable; it is very similar to the Honda Insight we tested recently.
Audi are now able to offer a premium, luxury Saloon that seats five people in comfort. It is high in quality, has a reasonable amount of power, improved fuel consumption along with a relatively low Co2 and an advantageous BIK position.
