The previous Ka made its world debut at the Paris motor show in 1996 and has been on sale for over twelve years with hardly any facelifts or noticeable modifications. It has been a resounding success for Ford with over 1.46 million sold worldwide, with 500,000 of those being sold in the UK.

The all new Ka is built at the Fiat plant in Tychy, Poland alongside the Fiat Panda and Fiat 500. Ford engineers have modified many parts including brakes, suspension and steering to give it more of a ‘Ford’ feel in terms of handling and comfort. The quality is very good although some of the plastics are a bit hard but then this is a budget car and everything in the car has to be done for a price. If you take into consideration the size and price of the Ka, it is very acceptable. The seats are comfortable and supportive and having an advanced chassis makes for a very pleasant ride.

The car we tested was the Zetec which costs £9,495 but the range starts from £7,945 for a Studio model. It is powered by a 1.2 litre engine that produces 69ps, has a top speed of 99mph and Co2 emissions of 119g/km. The power does not sound enough but it is adequate, although around Yorkshire it did struggle from time to time with some of the hills but you don’t buy this type of car for power, it is for economy.

The new Ka is a vast improvement on the previous model as it has improved styling, quality, comfort and space. It will appeal to males and females, young and old and is likely to sell just as many as the original Ka.
